Zara update 08/13/2022

Zara is still doing great! We went on a 6 mile hike and she enjoyed it very much!! Haha it was very tough for me though. 

Unfortunately we haven't been hiking as much due to me being busy on weekends and getting covid. So when we can we are trying to build back up to a 6 mile hike. Did a 2 mile hike last weekend which did not tire out Zara at all, afterwards we played. Next time a 4 mile! Then hopefully regular 6 mile hikes.

She is probably still slowly getting more wobbly and less stable, but she adapts very well to her condition and hardly ever moves in a way that disorients her anymore. 

One thing we've recently noticed is that she doesn't really wag her tail anymore, I think it's hard for her to wag it now. She will kind of wag her tail when she barks at dogs or gets very excited. I guess that just goes with the losing ability to control her limbs/not knowing where she is at spatially. 

Health wise she has been pretty good, the royal cainin urinary SO dog food has been keeping the UTIs at bay. We have to mix it with other food though and one of the foods we mixed it with she seems to have a bit of an allergy for so need to determine which one and cut that out of her diet. I'm probably gonna go back to mixing raw (Stella and Chewy dinner dust or toppers) with the royal canin instead of the Just Food For Dogs (has grains which I suspect is the issue). So she's kind of itchy now and has red skin again. I might make an appointment for the CADI Cytopoint shot again in the meantime, but I think it'd be better to figure out which grain is making her itchy. 

She is eating pretty well most days, sometimes skips lunch but she does typically eat breakfast and dinner. I haven't weighed her recently, mostly just going by how much her ribs stick out. Sometimes it's very hard to keep weight on her because she decides she just doesn't want to eat.

I have also been keeping up with her nails even though it takes half a trazadone to do them since she hates her feet being touched and will struggle tremendously.

Sonko n Immune-Mediated Muscle disease

2/14/2020 - Talked with a vet from Park Centre Animal Hospital in Alameda regarding Sonko's latest urine culture results.  Some background: Sonko, several of his siblings, his dam, and other close relatives have auto-immune issues. Several have an inherited immune-mediated muscle disease (IMM) or Lupus. So far 2 are in remission, 1 with IMM and 1 with Lupus. Some of the dogs have been euthanized due to complications of their disease. The age of onset of the known affected dogs is approximately 2-5 years. After onset of the autoimmune disease, some dogs' health have declined rapidly while in other the progression had been more gradual. As of this writing there is no DNA test for IMM. There is a DNA test for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) which is what I thought he had at first, but so many symptoms didn't fit. Zara update 3/4/2024

A lot has been going on!  Let's start with the health stuff: Zara has been on antibiotics again for UTI symptoms, she was on baytril for the primary bacteria and we finished that. But she still had symptoms so another urine culture later there's a secondary bacteria that we are treating with clavamox. About 10 days into the clavamox she started having times where she'd pant a lot and then get up every hour from around 2am-7am to get water (she'd drink for like 30s to 1min at a time) or wanting to go out. So yet another vet visit, another urine culture and blood work. Bloodwork looks good! Urine culture doesn't show any bacteria growth (thus is good). But the question remains, why is she so uncomfortable during the night? She would also pant randomly during the day when laying down when nothing is going on. March 21, 2020 Sonko

Haven't been updating..so much going on with the Covid19 Pandemic. Alameda County and 5 other counties on Shelter in place per the California health department then the Gov gave an order for all of California to stay at home (not as stringent as the health departments but very close). Zara, Sonko and Sassy in the back. Today sonko acted like he wanted to go outside (1st time in days) I carried him down the steps and he just followed me ..meandering around. Sassy and Zara tried to get him to play ball. He declined.  He just wanted to stand/lean against me. Then I carried him back up. Sponge bath and fresh diaper And walked him to his blanket. I held the water bowl up for him.
